2022 Annual Report

Meals til Monday means……

2022: A Year of Transition

In 2022 we resumed careful in-person activities, including school for our children. As we began bringing Meals til Monday bags back inside school buildings, rather than by “drive-thru” delivery, it was wonderful to hear the laugher of students. However, along with a “learning lag” due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there was also a “Meals til Monday lag” as we saw a drop in the number of students taking home bags. There were many reasons for this, but over time, we did see improvement. We still struggle reaching older students, but we continue to work closely with the schools to make sure that all kids who need Meals til Monday have access to bags of weekend food.
The generous support of donors and funders continued to keep us going. While we were still receiving our orders from the Maryland Food Bank at no cost, the requests for additional items increased, and we started supplying snack items to our schools for hungry students who needed healthy snacks during the school day. Thanks, in large part, to a generous $60,000 ARPA grant from the City of Cambridge, we have provided thousands of snack items for our kids in school and for out-of-school time.
We maintained our commitment to our neighbors-in-need in Dorchester County by holding food giveaway events throughout the county. Our food pantry in Vienna helped so many, primarily older adults, and families with food resources on a weekly basis.

Thank you for all you do to help us help our kids,
Leslie Bishop

…..no missed meals

"Life is one big transition." Willie Stargell

None of this would have been possible without the hard work of over 160 individual volunteers who gave their time and energy to help feed our children and neighbors. Numerous community groups, civic organizations, our friends with special abilities, and the Cambridge Police Department all helped pack the bags and hand out food. Finally, we decided it was time to become a separate nonprofit and we initiated the steps required to leave the Mid-Shore Community Foundation. We are so grateful to everyone at MSCF and could not have grown and developed without their guidance and assistance. As a result, we have hired a paid, full-time Executive Director, Pam Allen, who will lead us in this exciting undertaking. As I step down as director, I can only express my deep gratitude to each of you for helping us help our kids and families. I will continue to be involved in a different role with Meals til Monday; “Working to end childhood hunger on the MidShore and beyond.”

Fill the need…

Growth and Change…..

Since 2019 we have been operating a farmer’s market and food pantry in collaboration with the Town of Vienna. During the Covid 19 pandemic we were given permission by the Maryland Food Bank to keep the food pantry open year-round. The need to help our older neighbors and families in the northern area of our county exploded. The number of residents obtaining food from the pantry more than doubled in 2022, serving 50-75
families each week. Our Vienna Pantry Manager,
Mary Ann Willey also cooks and delivers meals to house-bound older adults requiring food assistance. Mary Ann makes sure everyone has meals! We are grateful to Vivian Calder, who puts the “farmer” in our Farmer’s Market! She sells fresh produce straight from her farm in Mardela Springs; without her weekly presence, there wouldn’t be a farmer’s market.
Thanks, Viv!

Meals til Monday & Americorp

One very special volunteer, Ms. Joyce Green, has been
serving with us this year as an Americorps Member. Here is
what Joyce had to say about her service:
“Working with Meals til Monday for the last several years
has been a blessing; making sure that our Dorchester County students and their families have nutritional meals available to them. This year I was given the opportunity to work for Meals til Monday through the Americorps/ShoreCorps program. Attending the training classes at Salisbury University was a challenge at first, not knowing the requirements of my service time and how this would help our students and families. As time went by, we were taught how to be an effective volunteer, deal with youth and older adult concerns, and how to be a better service member
in our community. I am so thankful for being a piece of the pie in this organization, coming together to end childhood hunger, one child and one
family at a time.

Thank you, Meals til
Monday, for all that you
do in our community.”

Joyce: We thank you for all that you do!

Our New Executive Director

I’m excited to bring you greetings as the new Executive Director of MidShore Meals til Monday. A native of Dorchester County, as with most youth, I couldn’t wait to leave when I graduated, which I did. However, as I matured, I realized Dorchester County wasn’t so bad, so I moved back to raise my daughter, and to give back to the community that nurtured me. Over the years, I have witnessed the food insecurity of many residents in Dorchester County and saw how it affected families. I knew this was an issue I wanted to help address. During the COVID -19 pandemic, I lost my job, which afforded me the opportunity to learn about, and volunteer with Meals til Monday. I volunteered for several months and quickly realized Meals til Monday was a perfect fit for me. I fell in love with the mission, the commitment of the volunteers and donors, and the vision of the founder, Leslie Bishop. When presented with the opportunity to become the first full-time paid Executive Director, I was indeed honored. It is a privilege to continue the great work of the organization while taking on the challenge of growing and moving Meals til Monday forward. We will continue to address “hungry” among children and families by providing food to our neighbors in need, and working with community partners, to focus on “hunger” in our community. Thank you to all who have supported this great organization and for supporting me over the past few months. I look forward to working with you to ensure that everyone in need has “Meals til Monday.”

Pamela R . Allen

Very special thanks to Captains Wendy and Bo Parsons of the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army continues to provide our “home” at no cost to us. Our food storage and packing facility is housed in a warehouse behind the Salvation Army Family Store; this “rent-free” assistance allows us to feed more kids and families.
