MidShore Meals til Monday (MtM) is working to end childhood hunger on Maryland’s Eastern Shore by providing healthy, nutritious food for food-insecure children and families in Dorchester County. Our volunteers have been providing hundreds of bags for school children each week along with monthly family food give-away events that include meats, canned and baked goods, household staples, and fresh produce.
Midshore Meals til Monday volunteers, supporters, and local elected officials attended a celebration party on March 27th to mark the fifth year anniversary of the program. Guests enjoyed delicious food and drinks while relaxing and conversing with MtM friends. Leslie Bishop briefly highlighted program accomplishments and milestones, including MtM’s winning the 2021 Governor’s Service Award for outstanding dedication to service and volunteerism as a Non-Profit Volunteer Program. MtM volunteer Joyce Green (interviewed below), received a special thank-you for her tremendous contributions to the program and for always being willing to take on any task to make sure the children and families in Dorchester County have the food they need to thrive.
Joyce Green has lived in Cambridge for more than 40 years, but was born and raised in Philadelphia. She has spent her life dedicated to helping others, working first in a daycare center in Philadelphia and later fulfilling many roles in Cambridge. She has served as a cub scout and boy scout master and a commissioner for 20 plus years, and volunteered as the choir president at Zion Baptist Church in Cambridge where she continues to be an active congregant. Joyce’s main volunteer job has been at the Empowerment Center where she regularly assists with the after school and summer programs, as well as with the seniors program which includes preparing and delivering soup twice a month for seniors on fixed incomes. She works four to five afternoons each week at the Empowerment Center, helping the children with homework, reading, math, physical education, meditation and social skills. The children’s ages in the program range from 6 to 13 years. Several Saturdays each month Joyce works with the older children from the Empowerment Center to help pack bags of food for families. She also currently serves on the board for the Empowerment Center as Vice President.
Joyce first started volunteering three to four years ago with MtM after meeting Leslie Bishop who attended an open house at the Empowerment Center. Leslie introduced herself and offered to help out at the Empowerment Center which led to her friendship with Joyce. In her volunteer role for MtM, Joyce will take on any task that needs completion such as assembling food bags for the school program, packing and distributing food at the large food give-aways held at the Empowerment Center, and serving on MtM’s advisory board. Joyce shared that what she most enjoys about MtM are the people and knowing that the food is going to children and families who really need help. Joyce praised Leslie Bishop for her accomplishments with MtM that have resulted in reducing food insecurity among the children and families in Dorchester. Joyce Green is a kind-hearted person who has been a major contributor to MtM’s mission and is a cherished member of the greater Cambridge Community.
Together we can ensure that every child in Dorchester County gets adequate nourishment and no one goes hungry.
