Who We Are

MidShore Meals til Monday (MtM) is working to end childhood hunger on Maryland’s Eastern Shore by providing healthy, nutritious food each week for food-insecure children in Dorchester County. MtM works with the school system and community partners to ensure children can thrive and reach their fullest potential. Our volunteers have been providing more than 700 bags weekly through our distribution channels along with monthly food give-away opportunities that include frozen meats, canned and baked goods, and fresh produce.

Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Barbara Johnson Bishop

Barbara Johnson Bishop is a native of Cambridge who has spent most of her life in her hometown, except for approximately 14 years when she and her husband lived in Laurel, Delaware. Barbara has volunteered with Meals til Monday since nearly its inception in 2017. She first met founder and director Leslie Bishop and her husband and co-founder Will Bishop at an open house at Cambridge Empowerment Center. Barbara fondly remembers joking with Leslie that they were cousins since they share the same last name. Barabara volunteers at the monthly MtM food give-away events held at the Empowerment Center distributing food bags to families. She previously helped as the official plastic bag “fluffer” at the Salvation Army packing site getting bags ready to be filled with weekend meal items for school children. Barbara enjoys helping her family and others in the Cambridge community. For many years she volunteered with the children’s program at the Empowerment Center assisting students, serving lunches, and completing administrative paperwork and other tasks. Currently, Barabara enjoys seeing her family as often as possible and helps out by babysitting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Barbara recently enjoyed a backyard party with more than 100 family members present to celebrate her great grandson’s first birthday. She also likes to watch out for her neighbors in the senior apartment building where she resides by cooking them an occasional meal. When asked what was the most rewarding aspect of volunteering for MtM, Barbara was quick to reply, “I enjoy the people, the work of assembling and handing out food bags, and helping others.” She also commented that she especially enjoys working with Leslie Bishop and being part of the MtM family.

MidShore Meals til Monday 2017-2020 Report

MidShore Meals til Monday is proud to share our first Annual Report highlighting the various programs, outcomes and achievements related to our goal of ending childhood hunger on the Mid-Shore and beyond. MtM is the largest “backpack” program in Dorchester County and provides nutritious, non-perishable food for children facing food insecurity in schools.

Meals til Monday bags containing breakfast, lunch and snacks are offered to students at four elementary schools and two middle schools in Dorchester County. Meals til Morning food bags with dinner items, snack and breakfast are offered primarily to students in both high schools, Cambridge-South Dorchester and North Dorchester. Since its inception, MtM has distributed approximately 286,820 lbs of food, and 55,968 food bags to school children and food give-away bags to families. Beginning in January 2021, MtM began offering four large food distributions (food give-aways) per month, allowing us to reach more members of the community, in particular seniors. The food give-aways consist of fresh produce, frozen meats, pantry items, and canned food. Read the Annual Report to learn more about MtM’s amazing journey, accomplishments, and the contributions of our community partner organizations and volunteers.
