Who We Are

MidShore Meals til Monday (MtM) is working to end childhood hunger on Maryland’s Eastern Shore by providing healthy, nutritious food for food-insecure children and families in Dorchester County. Our volunteers have been providing more than 700 bags weekly along with monthly food give-away opportunities that include meats, canned and baked goods, and fresh produce. MtM works with the school system and community partners to ensure children can thrive and reach their fullest potential. We sincerely thank the IRONMAN Foundation and Choptank Transport Better Than Par Golf Tournament for their generous donations to Midshore Meals til Monday this month.

Volunteer Spotlight: Mary Ann Willey

Mary Ann Willey has been an enthusiastic MtM volunteer for the last two years. In her volunteer capacity Mary Ann has spent numerous hours each week helping fill and distribute food bags at schools; and also assisting at the food give-aways by packing and handing out grocery bags to families. Mary Ann also delivers MtM food bags to homebound seniors who may have limited mobility or use a wheelchair. Occasionally, Mary Ann prepares home cooked meals and delivers them to elderly residents who have trouble driving to the food give-away events. Mary Ann describes her work with Midshore Meals til Monday as an amazing and humbling experience; one that has allowed her to help so many people in need. The community service experience has been a positive outlet for Mary Ann in the years since her husband passed away providing her the opportunity to help others and work with like-minded Midshore Meals til Monday volunteers. Mary Ann received a 2021 Exceptional Volunteer Award for her many contributions to the work and mission of MtM.

Mary Ann has deep family roots in Dorchester County where she has lived most of her life. She graduated from Cambridge South Dorchester High School and currently lives a few houses away from her childhood home. Mary Ann started a family bakery business in recent years that is affectionately called “Funny Farm Fresh.” Mary Ann enjoys working alongside her children and grandchildren running the family business where everyone lends a hand and their expertise. They sell an array of tasty bakery items and fresh eggs at the Vienna Farmer’s Market every Friday, at the Hebron Farmer’s Market on Sundays, and by special order. The Vienna Farmer’s Market was started three years ago by MtM and the Town of Vienna to serve the needs of this small community. In partnership with the Maryland Food Bank, the Vienna Farmer’s Market offers free food and produce for those who need assistance, and sales by several vendors that sell produce, small gifts, and baked goods.

Volunteer Spotlight: Ashley Escobar

Ashley Escobar is a shining star among Midshore Meals til Monday’s volunteers. She is a senior at The Gunston School in Centreville, Maryland, and resides with her family in Cambridge. From December 2020 through the summer Ashley worked with MtM as a paid intern and in a volunteer capacity. Her various duties included assisting every Friday at the Vienna Farmer’s Market free food pantry by setting up signs, organizing the food items on tables, and greeting and helping families who come to pick up groceries. Ashley also helped Leslie Bishop, MtM Director, with clerical assistance and in translating promotional flyers and postcards into Spanish. In addition to her contributions at the Vienna Farmer’s Market, Ashley volunteered at monthly food give-away events filling grocery bags with canned goods and distributing bags to families at the food give-aways at the Empowerment Center and at Vienna and Warwick Elementary Schools. She also distributed weekend food bags to children at Warwick Elementary.

Ashley became a MtM volunteer after being inspired by a friend’s mother who volunteered at a food pantry in Easton. She researched online to find a similar program she could volunteer within Dorchester County. When asked what she enjoys most about volunteering with Midshore Meals til Monday, Ashley stated she enjoys working in general, especially knowing that this work has a positive impact on her community. “I love the Eastern Shore and I’ve grown to appreciate the history of Cambridge and the natural beauty of the environment of Dorchester County.” Ashley plans on attending college next year and is considering possible majors including finance, accounting and eventually earning an MBA. Midshore Meals til Monday thanks Ashley for her many contributions to the program and wishes her the best as she takes on the challenges of her last year in high school.
