Summer is shaping up to be a very busy season for Midshore Meals til Monday (MtM)! And with the last day of school on June 15th fast approaching, many Dorchester County families may find the need for extra food support over the summer a real challenge.
According to Feeding America, for the more than 22 million children who depend on school breakfast and lunch programs, summer vacation means worrying about when they’ll eat next. MtM is geared up to help families bridge these gaps. Upcoming large food give-aways in the month of June are scheduled for Friday, June 10th (noon – 4:00 pm) at the Cambridge Empowerment Center on 615 Pine Street; Tuesday, June 14th (3:30 – 6:00 pm) at Vienna Elementary School; and Wednesday, June 29th (2:00-5:30 pm) at C. Mowbray/S. Camper Park Housing Authority on 700 Weaver Avenue, Cambridge. In July, there will be large food give-aways on Friday, July 22nd (2:00 – 5:30 pm) at New Beginnings Learning Center on 512 Greenwood Avenue, Cambridge; and Thursday, July 28th (12:00 – 4:00 pm) at the Eldorado Fire House, Eldorado, MD.
These food give-away events provide families with frozen meats, canned and baked goods, household staples, and fresh produce. MtM also holds a food pantry at the Vienna Farmer’s Market on Fridays from 3:00-6:00 pm that includes meats, bakery products, produce and non-perishable food for anyone needing food assistance. Follow the signs for the MtM food pantry behind the white building across from Millie’s Restaurant in Vienna.
Additional large food-giveaways will be scheduled later in the summer and announced on MtM’s website and FaceBook page.
MtM is forming a team of volunteers to help with Eagleman Race on June 12th. MtM will receive a donation from the race organizers for offering this assistance. MtM volunteers will be marshals at the intersection of Hambrooks and Somerset in Cambridge – getting up close to runners and bikers and spectators, guiding them where they need to go. At least 10 volunteers per shift on June 12th are needed. For more information and to join the MtM team, sign up for the Bike/Run Course Marshal-Somerset location here. For additional information contact Linda Starling, lindabstarling@yahoo.com.
Looking for ways to get involved in the community by helping Midshore Meals til Monday carry out their mission? Volunteers are always needed to pack weekend food bags for school children, pack and hand out grocery staples, frozen food and produce at the large food give-aways, and help in other ways. Find out more about volunteering for MtM and sign-up here.
Together we can ensure that every child in Dorchester County gets adequate nourishment and no one goes hungry.
