Report by Mike Detmer (mdetmer@chespub.com) and published in The Dorchester Star.

MidShore Meals til Monday (MSMTM) volunteers served over 3,000 bags of food to children in the community in the month of March, according to MSMTM Director Leslie Bishop.

Between the two packing sites at Vienna Elementary School and the Salvation Army location on Rt. 50 in Cambridge, MSMTM volunteers logged almost 400 hours of work to served 3,424 bags of food to feed children on weekends.

At the VES site, 13 volunteers recorded a total of 34 hours, making 520 bags of food for 120 children, as well as providing food for seniors that volunteer.

At the Salvation Army packing facility, 60 individuals filled 137 different volunteer slots, with some individuals working more than one day for over 350 volunteer hours to make and distributed 2904 bags.

Bishop said, “I am so deeply grateful for the community support and for all our wonderful volunteers. What we have accomplished together is truly awe-inspiring and I am truly grateful for everyone.”

Bishop said volunteer Maple Elementary School site coordinator Rona Herman has been picking up 80 bags each week and taking them to the students’ homes every Wednesday. “I really admire her for doing this,” said Bishop. “She told me it gives her a chance to get to know the families—they’ll come out of their homes to talk to her from a safe distance.”

Bishop said that Meals til Monday has all needed volunteers at this time, but needs monetary donations. New Meals til Monday t-shirts are available for $25, or complimentary with a $125 donation. Donations can be made online or sent to our address: MidShore Meals til Monday, P.O. Box 1193, Cambridge, MD 21613.
