“Working to end Childhood Hunger on the MidShore and Beyond.”
MidShore Meals til Monday is working to end hunger on Maryland’s Eastern Shore by providing weekend food bags for food-insecure children and large food give-aways for families in Dorchester County.
Meals til Monday (MtM) sends home healthy, nutritious food year round to bridge the hunger gap for children without access to adequate food. MtM offers large food give-aways weekly at the Vienna Food Pantry and monthly at Mace’s Lane Middle School. MtM works with the school system and other community partners to ensure Dorchester County’s children and their families can thrive and reach their fullest potential.
Each bag of weekend food contains approximately 10 items for breakfast, lunch/dinner and snacks. Contents may include cereal, oatmeal, breakfast bars, peanut butter, jelly, whole grain crackers, macaroni and cheese, fruit cup, and canned proteins such as tuna fish. More food is provided for any extended period of time off from school. Every three months dental hygiene items are included in the bags and each winter all MtM students are given warm hats and gloves. Our SNAP-ED partner periodically makes food nutrition information available with each bag of food. The Salvation Army on Route 50 in Cambridge generously provides Midshore Meals til Monday a rent-free warehouse space for food packing and storage.
For the large food give-aways at the Vienna Food Pantry and Mace’s Lane Middle School, families receive a bag of non-perishable items, frozen meats, and fresh vegetables, breads and pastries when available. Approximately 100 to 125 families participate in the weekly and monthly food pantry events.
Private donations and grants help purchase food from the Maryland Food Bank (Eastern Shore) and other sources for our programs. As a volunteer non-profit organization, our network of dedicated volunteers has distributed over 600,000 meals since 2017. Donations are tax deductible as MidShore Meals til Monday is a registered 501 (c) (3).
Our programs currently provide food for more than 800 elementary, middle and high school students receiving the Meals til Monday weekend bag of food or the Meals til Morning overnight bag of food, primarily for high school students.
According to the Maryland State Department of Education, 57.3% of students in Dorchester County were economically disadvantaged as of 2022 and over 95% of students qualified for free/reduced price meals according to federal income guidelines.
“The number of children we can serve is only limited by the donations we receive,” said MtM Founder Leslie Bishop. “We are grateful for the support we have, but we need more to ensure all children have access to adequate nutrition.”
Our volunteers are the lifeblood of the program and are passionate believers in our mission. Our dedicated volunteers pack the bags of food, organize food drives, assist with our large food distributions at our partner schools, deliver our MtM bags to our schools and do so much more to help feed hungry children and their families in Dorchester County. For ways to become involved to help end hunger in our community please see our website.
We welcome donations of non-perishable food items and we also accept fresh produce from growers and farmers. Charitable gifts of any amount make a difference in a child’s life and can be made on our website.
